Games

I'm a video game producer and I love gaming. I like MMO's, board games, console games and card games. I've been playing board games with my family since I was very little, console gaming since I was nine, and MMO'ing since I was 23.

New Job

This week has been pretty crazy. It didn't start off being all that notable. It's the second to last week of the school quarter and I'm ahead in my classes, so no stress there. I had set up a phone interview with a company web company to maybe do some contract work with them, but it was a company I've worked with before so there wasn't much pressure there either. Then on Tuesday I was contacted by a friend working at a social mmo (massively multi-player online, i.e. lots of frigin people playing over the Internet all in the same virtual world). I went in for a rushed interview Wednesday, since I didn't have much time Thursday or Friday. By Wednesday night I was a member of their team and had two meetings set up for Thursday! Thursday was my first official day.

I'm am acting as a producer there, mostly a liaison between the community team and the dev team and tracking dev and community tasks and events. It was a crazy whirlwind experience. And especially crazy with a backpacking trip coming up this weekend, and you all know how much food prep that involves. At the time of writing it's 7 am, just an hour and a half until we leave for our trip and I'm still dehydrating food for the trip.

On that note, I should get going so I can pack up the car. I am really looking forward to the relaxation and the solitude this weekend. I leave you with a link to the website of the company that I now work for: Real Life Plus.

It's been over a week since I've posted, which might lead some of you to wonder "where the heck is she!?" Well, despite not having a job, or any other regular commitments, I've been keeping myself quite busy.

First, and least important, is that I have been playing more World of Warcraft lately. I think this satisfies some innate need I have to be short term goal oriented. At this time in my life the only goals I have are the ones I set myself, and that's kind of a big list of large items. WoW gives me small daily goals to achieve and gives me a sense of accomplishment on a daily basis.

A more long term goal I have been working on (and the reason for the attached picture) is learning C++. C++ is the computer programming language that was used at the game companies I've worked at. In the last 7 years or so I've picked up tid-bits about programming and scripting languages here and there, and even edited a few programs. In the grand scheme of things that's so little experience with programming, I could never say I know such-and-such a language. So I thought while I'm unemployed I could learn C++ and get a better idea of what the teams I manage are actually doing. As a far distant dream, I'd love to be able to write a small game of my own, but that's much further down the line.

Last, and probably least, I've been tracking my daily walks with Sadie. They are getting longer and longer everyday. Hopefully I'll be in shape in time for our late June backpacking trip.

We Rule, iPhone Game

Lately I've gotten totally addicted to this new iPhone game called "We Rule". It's by a prominent iPhone gaming company called "Ngomoco:)" (yeah, smile face and everything). It's a cross between something like Sim City and Farmville, but set in a fantasy land (and you all know how much I like fantasy). I wish it had more sim like qualities to it. Like, I would love to see the amount of farmland you have correlate with the number of villagers you have (i.e. number of cottages you build), rather than what level you are. It seems so limiting the way it is now. Anyway, there are lots of aspects I would like to see have more sim in it, but I won't go on boring people with details. If you have an iPhone you should check this game out and look me up. It's free, so no loss if it's not your type of game. Personally, I can't wait to get a big dragon flying around my kingdom.

Apple's App Store

Since I'm working for a company that is making iPhone games, I've been thinking a lot about the medium that Apple uses to distribute games. Most recently I've been thinking about the quality bar... or lack there of.

Quality, usefulness and fun in an application is not something Apple is moderating. I'm not just talking about the sadly high number of beer and fart apps on the App Store. I'm talking about RSS readers that crash all the time. I'm talking about apps that offer little to no usefulness. Like chat programs that don't have push, RSS readers that don't support image zoom or html, or apps that just don't give a damn about looks and ease of navigation. I'm talking about quality bar.
